The Price Of Meth

Here's the running monitor of the price per pound of methamphetamine.  We were going to keep including international prices as well, but there are so many reports now from the United Kingdom and elsewhere, we can't possibly keep up with it - we just don't have enough staff because it takes a lot of work to keep this current and accurate.

Keep in mind, every number you see below is what one pound of meth is reported as being worth, and as of late February 2008, where possible, we've begin dating the reports as well.  In our files, we also have the media outlet we're using as a source for the report.  If you have a question about a report, just email us.

And by the way, when you're measuring the price of meth, take into consideration the purity.  What's being imported and sold now is far purer.  Even if the price is higher, in terms of "bang for the buck," pound for pound, meth is cheaper today than it's ever been.

A Little Confusing?

As you can see, it's extremely hard to get a consistent picture.  And the perception is, either no one seems to have a clue what the price of meth is, or everyone has a different formula for calculating and reporting it.  In some cases, in the exact same area, within one day, the "estimated street price per pound" doubles or triples!

So we're not suggesting that anyone is padding their figures, or fabricating anything.  But what we are suggesting is that in order to make such information useful, educational, or informative, it has to be more consistent.  When people, particularly younger people see this massive amount of inconsistency, their impression is that nobody in authority knows what they're talking about.

Clearly, when you see huge variations in the price per pound of meth in the same area, sometimes within a day of each other, and sometimes even talking about the same seizure, that's pretty much when the "information" ceases to "inform."   At that point, the numbers, the amounts, and most importantly - the message, ceases to have real meaning because no one can make sense of it.

And make no mistake, as we've learned, it's not easy quoting "estimated street prices" for meth, because prices jump all over the map, month to month, even week to week.  Unlike cocaine and heroin, the price isn't tied to a growing season, or all the other variables that are involved with crop-based drugs.  Meth is an extremely inexpensive drug to make and distribute so you never know where the price is going.

But we feel that we can do better than what's currently being done.  Whether this is just a case of misperception or not, perception is still nine-tenths of reality.  Somehow, we have to figure out how to communicate this information so it actually means something.  On the next and final page of this section, we look at some solutions to this problem.

And as far as the price of meth being any indication of how effective interdiction and/or enforcement is, give us a break.  There has never been a correlation in the past, nor is there one now.  And frankly, that applies to all illicit drugs.
