The Foreword
For me, discovering the “Big Book” Of Alcoholics Anonymous was like a drowning man being thrown a life preserver. On first reading I considered it a masterpiece, and after countless re-reads necessary to compile “The Big Words In The Big Book,” my respect for the Big Book’s insight and wisdom has only grown. In view of this, this book is not an attempt to editorialize the Big Book, nor an attempt to render my personal opinion as to what meaning should be taken from the text. That responsibility properly rests with the reader. My primary goal was to measurably extend the length to which the “life preserver” could be thrown, to reach other people “drowning” in a life of addiction.
To this end, “The Big Words In The Big Book” is designed to be used by almost anyone, despite their vocabulary or level of formal education. In addition, since a great many people’s first exposure to the Big Book is via a donated Third Edition, our book covers both the Fourth and Third Edition of the Big Book. We also intend to have “The Big Words In The Big Book” translated into every language that the Big Book is available in, as well as Braille.
If I permitted myself any “artistic licence” whatsoever, it was simply to define certain words with more contemporary equivalents, adjusting some terms to the times we live in now, which are obviously different from the 1930’s. For those phrases and words that by their nature, did require some subjective evaluation and decisions, I relied heavily on the writings by A.A.’s co-founders and other authorities both in and out of A.A. that are generally considered credible.
I extend my gratitude to the staff of The East General Withdrawal Management Centre, Ozanam House, Renascent Treatment Centre, Transition House and most notably, Alphahouse. Certain people in each of these facilities played a critical role in helping me better understand who and what I am, and they work tirelessly without ever receiving the recognition they so richly deserve. Special thanks to Barb and the late Nick of Ozanam. Also Greg, Denise, Jill, Dave, Glen and Colleen of Transition House. And last but certainly not least, Donna, Marg, Dave, Vernon, and all the staff of Alpha House. I am also grateful to The Hill Group and The Sunday Morning Men’s Meeting in Toronto. The weekly inspiration I received at these meetings over the past three years was invaluable, particularly in the early going.
Most of all, my love and thanks to Susie, who believed in me and supported me every step of the way in creating this vehicle to help others more readily access the miracle of the Big Book. This book is also dedicated to my parents and my sister, because they actually live the Twelve Step philosophy every day of their lives without even knowing it.
And for you, who find this book helpful in your understanding of The Big Book, I sincerely hope your journey of recovery will be as incredible as mine has been thus far
